  • Pet Food Recall - Salmonella Poisoning

    Add Comment

Mars Petcare has announced a recall of several lines of its pet food, including Special Kitty cat food and Ol' Roy dog food. The recall affects all pet food produced at one of its plants, which had become tainted with salmonella. Although there are no reports of pets getting sick, there have been several cases of people getting sick after handling the pet food - particularly toddlers, who presumably played with the food and/or ate some of it out of the bowl.

Is it just me, or was 2008 a bad year for pet food?

  • Does Your Cat Go on Walks With You?

    Add Comment

I have written a few entries in the past few weeks regarding my odd and auspicious, yet oh so cute and lovable kitten named Migs. We found our cat outside of our home one night, roughly a year ago, he was homeless and hungry, and very thin. The neighborhood kids next door had named him Migs because he would streak across the front yards at lightning speed, like a Russian Mig fighter jet, and the name just sort of stuck.

  • Why You Need Cat Health Insurance

I can easily recall a few months back when I found my cat outside bleeding—he is an outdoor indoor cat with his own kitty door and sometimes he can get into fights with other cats when playing outside during the day—and I knew that I needed to take him right into the veterinarian office to get checked out; to make sure that all was well.

  • Chinese Pet Lovers Protest Cat Slaughter

The Associated Press reports on a rising protest outside the Guangdong government office in Beijing. The protests were partly inspired by a series of articles recently in the Chinese press regarding the practice of rounding up cats in rural provinces, and butchering them for meat.

  • More Gifts From my Cat – This Time it’s a Pigeon!

    Add Comment

If you have ever had the distinct pleasure with the company of a cat for a pet, then you already know where I am going with this one merely based off the title. But where my story may beg to differ from the others that surround this often talked about topic, with regards to our cats, is that the present he (my cat) brought to me this time, for a change, was still alive.

  • Kitten Safety Tips

    Add Comment
Keeping your kittens safe is much like doing the same for a puppy. Both are very curious and will get into anything. Kittens however have a tendency to get themselves into more trouble since they have the ability to climb and jump from virtually anywhere they so please.

Playful kittens love to play with anything that dangles like cords, jewelry and house plants. If you have a kitten at home or are thinking about bringing a kitten home, you need to pretty much baby proof your house only with a cat in mind.

  • Does your cat like to hang upside down?

    Add Comment

Okay, this is a weird anomaly, at least I think so. I have a very eccentric, lovable and cuddly kitten that loves to curl up, snuggle, is very fond of laps and is indeed, a fantastically tempered cat. But he does one thing that I find to be very uncharacteristic of cats: he likes to hang upside down from my arms. Not once in a while, but all of the time. He will jump up into my arms for a cuddle, and then wiggle his butt and his body so he overhangs my arm. He even sleeps on his back most of time, looking up at the ceiling. Is this abnormal behavior for a cat?

  • Is Man’s Best Friend Really a Dog?

    Add Comment

Ah Dogs and cats, forever friends and equally enemies – in many cases that is. But is a dog man’s best friend, really? I actually happen to own a long haired tabby named Migs – because he is silver and streaks across the house faster than a Russian Mig Fighter Jet. But, I also own a full grown Timber wolf, yes wolf, and a full grown Lab, and mind you, my cat and my dog, and my wolf, are all the best of friends, so no worries, there. The wolf even lets the cat eat out of his dish and drink water out of his dish, and will even drop pieces of food for the cat to share.

I have a cat that was homeless and I believe she is spayed. However this male cat keeps trying to mate. Do spayed cats still engage in sexual behavior?

  • What to do

I have three kittens I took in from the outdoors a couple of weeks ago. They are approximately 10 weeks old now. I was wondering if anyone had any training ideas. Currently I am keeping them in one of my bathrooms. They like to get into things, and I am worried about what could happen to them. One has already fallen down a heat vent (the vents were not screwed in and they knocked if off somehow) and crawled out of a very narrow vent on the opposite side of my house. Anyway, I let them roam in one of the bedrooms for a little while and they tended to go towards cords, etc.

  • Diarrhea in Cats: What to Do and When to Do It

    Add Comment

In and of itself, a bout of loose stools isn't necessarily cause for alarm. Stress or a change in diet can easily give your cat the runs for a day or two. Occasionally it happens to the best of us, am I right? (Never give your cat dairy products like milk. These are guaranteed to upset your cat's tummy.)

Diarrhea as a stand-alone problem can cause dehydration and loss of electrolytes, but this isn't a concern right away.

  • My Scaredy Cat Sophia

Hi! 2 years ago I went to the local Animal Shelter and bought my love, Sophia. Sophia and I have bonded real well during this time. The only problem I have with Sophia, who may be anywhere between 4 and 6 years old, has a problem being around anyone else. Sophia lives with me (obviously - full 2 years) and my fiance (1 1/2 yrs). If I am home alone, Sophia will follow me everywhere but if my fiance is home she will not come out from underneath the couch until we have been sitting down and not moving for a while but will sleep with us at night.

  • The CatGenie Automatic Litter Box

The number one hassle for most cat owners is litter box management. It's an unpleasant chore involving an often inefficient device, or even multiple devices. While the concept of a self-cleaning litter box is nothing new, the technology keeps getting updated to maximize functionality and improve the device's aesthetic appeal.

  • Viggo Is a Pussy - Part 2

(This is a continuation of the story of how my cat Viggo got his name.)

My friend and former housemate Val and I are two very different people, and back then we seldom agreed on anything.

For instance, her taste in men runs toward pretty boys – long wavy hair, clean-shaven, smooth chest, slender, sweet, and so on.

    Viggo is a pussy.

No, really. He’s a gray and white tuxedo cat (his tux is a fashionable dove gray rather than black) who lives in Seattle, likes to hang out in the carport or roam the neighborhood when he’s not napping on my bed, and yowls when he wants something done ASAP.

This is the story of how he got his name.

I was living in a shared house at the time with three housemates and one elderly cat, Krissy.

  • Chronic Diarrhea

    Hello,
I have 6 foster kittens, ages 9 weeks to 16 weeks that have had diarrhea for several weeks unresponsive to Albon, Amoxi-Drops, Cefa Drops, Clavamox, yogurt, acidophyllus, rice and Pres.Diet ID. Nothing helps. Fecal specimens have been negative for anything other than increased bacteria. Their stool is very foul-smelling, frequent and yellow with no form. They are growing well, however.

  • Patience is a Virtue

    Add Comment
Friendly house pets who can at times be too smart for their own good have found a place in my heart as well as my home. Or better put, I have found a place in their house. Primarily indoor cats, they get full access to every nook and cranny. The shy one of the two sisters rarely causes any disturbance, but the other one is a whole different story.
Patience, not named for her amount of patience, but to remind us as her caregivers to be patient every time we have to yell at misbehavior. Spoiled as she is, boredom comes easily for her.

  • My cat is sick .. or nervous.. or something

Hello. Please help me if you can. My cat has been having I think diarrhea, and he now is hiding in the basement and won't come out. He is in an awkward space in the ceiling of the basement and I can't coax him down. Previously he has been crouching and twitching, and then he runs around like crazy. He's all right in small enclosed spaces or when I am petting him, but otherwise he acts like he is terrified. He is a one year old neutered male. Please help. Thanks.
